The excerpt reveals that the rent for one house included light, while the rent for 9 apartments included heat only, and the rent for one apartment included heat and light. The article then presents Table 3, which shows the FAMILIES WITH SURPLUS AND DEFICIT IN 1916, BY INCOME GROUPS.
The passage then shifts to discussing DOPE POISONING IN THE MANUFACTURE OF AIRPLANE WINGS. It notes that for the most part, the making of airplanes is not a dangerous trade, as it is chiefly woodwork and upholstering. However, there is one stage in the preparation of the linens used to cover most of the surface of the structure which is attended with risk of poisoning. This is the use of so-called dope to tighten up the linen, and make it durable and waterproof.
The base of dopes used for airplanes is currently a cellulose compound, either the nitrate or the acetate. Cellulose acetate and nitrate are both quite free from poisonous properties, but their solvents are not. A study of the risks involved in airplane manufacture resolves itself into a study of dope solvents. Cellulose acetate is relatively non-inflammable, a great advantage. It dissolves best in tetrachlorethane, or acetylene tetrachloride, C2H2Cl4.
The article then goes on to discuss the potential risks and hazards associated with the use of these dope solvents in the manufacture of airplane wings.
